Determined how we are going to attach the 1" PVC pipe mast. Dave is buying some black spray paint for plastic. Jack made a "crows nest" for the top and we also have a "Jolly Roger" flag. Dave started designing some additional cardboard add-ons. We are back to a 3 day a week work schedule.

Construction day 19 - 7/29/2011

Added cardboard angles to both keels for more support when trailering. Larry Williams is constructing carpeted pads to support the boat better. Will prime new cardboard over the weekend so we can flip the boat on Monday and work on our decorations.

Trial launch day 7/26/2011

The boat was launched and a trial paddle was made. Performed well, sat well in water as predicted. Some soft spots occurred on both keels where we used the 2 x 4's to carry it. Used Bob Pluta's boat trailer to transport it to the Del Webb boat ramp.

Will use appliance corner protectors to make the gunwales. New rudder assembly and paint job on last years boat in background. Karl & Victor are working that project.

Today the boat was flipped again and work was done on the sides adding more cardboard.

Construction day 11 - 7/11/2011

Don, Gary, Dave & Kermit worked on cementing the final floor pieces in place then setting the seats and gluing. They also made covers to protect the honeycomb seat material which will be glued down on Wednesday.
Larry V., Larry W., and I worked on the bow, adding additional layers and interior supports. Larry W. also made a template for the under side of the bow.
I signed the registration forms for the teams and Steve Guss will turn them in today to OPAS. We are officially registered!

Construction day 10 - 7/8/2011

Continued work on the floors and bow. Progress appears slow at the moment, however once we get the floor and top bow section completed the gunwales should go fairly quickly. The guys are also busy gathering items for their pirate costumes.
Karl & Victor have been busy with the Flying Dragon priming the hull in preparation for application of the update color scheme.
The teams also had a short paddling practice Wednesday evening. Things are shaping up!

Construction day 9 - 7/6/2011

Dave and Leo worked on the supports for the floor today. I worked on the bow. Friday hopefully we can finish the floor, seats & bow.

Construction day 8 - 7/4/2011

Today we worked on finishing the remainder of the seat supports, then cut and taped edges of floor supports. The floor will be installed in five separate pieces per floor section of which there are seven. First two side panels that follow the "v" of the "W" are glued in. Then comes the top layer of thick honeycomb followed by two more cardboard layers.

Construction day 7 - 7/1/2011

Today there were three of us working on installing the rear seat supports. K.G., Kermit and Tom made "L" bracket of cardboard to use as anchors for the seat supports. Earlier in the week Karl and Victor completed constructing the new rudder for last years boat Puff.
The gals have decided on a new name and paint job for Puff. The paint color scheme will remain a secret until unveiling at the send off party. That is unless you stop by the garage for a peek. Captain Joyce is also working on other refinements for their boat.

Construction day 6 - 6/27/2011

We flipped the boat today after cementing a second layer of cardboard to the bottom, covering both keels. Worked on layout of seats and seat supports. Also made a stern piece which we will cement on later this week. Conversation is leading toward having 4 seats and eight guys in the boat. I will make that determination later this week. Since we have so many guys wanting to work, I recommended we schedule only 6 guys at a time to help keep our focus on the build. I will send out a schedule later this week.

Construction day 5 - 6/24/2011

Day five of construction and we continued to work on the bottom of the boat. We constructed a triangular wedge the length of the boat and anchored it to the center of the "W" with contact cement. We then slid a cardboard carpet tube inside and capped off the ends. All joints were caulked with liquid nails and edges taped. Another layer of cardboard will be placed over the dual keels and across the center of the bottom of the boat. Short day today, need to let things dry before turning the boat over to start on the gunwales.

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Construction day 4 - 6/22/2011

Today we finished doubling the cardboard thickness on the outside of the boat up to where the gunwale starts. We also glued up 8 cross-member supports for the inside of the hull. These will also support the four seats. They are "W" shaped, four pieces glued and stacked to make a 1" thick piece.

Monday, June 20, 2011

Construction day 3 - 6/20/2011

We continue construction by adding a second layer to the bottom of the boat. Panels are cut and contact cement is used to put them together. Again it is important to tape all edges to keep water from being absorbed into the corrugation.

Friday, June 17, 2011

Construction day 2 - 6/17/2011

Larry Williams made two templates and brought them today. It is an upside down 'W". The top should be about 40 inches wide and be good and stable. In order to make the W shape it is necessary to lightly score each joint so that the cardboard can be folded. We joined two hull parts together and taped all open edges and seams. We used an overlapping 6" joint and contact cement .
Karl and Victor are working on Tuesdays to modifying last years boat replacing the steering oar with a rudder.

Monday, June 13, 2011
