Construction day 6 - 6/27/2011

We flipped the boat today after cementing a second layer of cardboard to the bottom, covering both keels. Worked on layout of seats and seat supports. Also made a stern piece which we will cement on later this week. Conversation is leading toward having 4 seats and eight guys in the boat. I will make that determination later this week. Since we have so many guys wanting to work, I recommended we schedule only 6 guys at a time to help keep our focus on the build. I will send out a schedule later this week.

Construction day 5 - 6/24/2011

Day five of construction and we continued to work on the bottom of the boat. We constructed a triangular wedge the length of the boat and anchored it to the center of the "W" with contact cement. We then slid a cardboard carpet tube inside and capped off the ends. All joints were caulked with liquid nails and edges taped. Another layer of cardboard will be placed over the dual keels and across the center of the bottom of the boat. Short day today, need to let things dry before turning the boat over to start on the gunwales.

Construction day 4 - 6/22/2011

Today we finished doubling the cardboard thickness on the outside of the boat up to where the gunwale starts. We also glued up 8 cross-member supports for the inside of the hull. These will also support the four seats. They are "W" shaped, four pieces glued and stacked to make a 1" thick piece.

Construction day 3 - 6/20/2011

We continue construction by adding a second layer to the bottom of the boat. Panels are cut and contact cement is used to put them together. Again it is important to tape all edges to keep water from being absorbed into the corrugation.

Construction day 2 - 6/17/2011

Larry Williams made two templates and brought them today. It is an upside down 'W". The top should be about 40 inches wide and be good and stable. In order to make the W shape it is necessary to lightly score each joint so that the cardboard can be folded. We joined two hull parts together and taped all open edges and seams. We used an overlapping 6" joint and contact cement .
Karl and Victor are working on Tuesdays to modifying last years boat replacing the steering oar with a rudder.
